CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Fifty-one undocumented, convicted criminals and fugitives were arrested during a four-day sting in the Chicago area and northwest Indiana.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the operation that ended Sunday, according to an ICE release.

Forty-four of those arrested were previously convicted of crimes including child molestation, aggravated battery, drunken driving, criminal sexual abuse, fraud and drug possession, ICE said.

A 39-year-old Syrian man, arrested Jan. 23 in Melrose Park, had eight aggravated felony convictions for residential burglary, retail theft, theft, burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia, ICE said.

A 25-year-old Mexican man, arrested Jan. 27 in Elgin, is a registered sex offender with prior criminal convictions for sexually exploiting a child, public indecency and lewd exposure, ICE said.

Eighteen arrestees were immigration fugitives who were ordered to leave the country but failed to do so, ICE said. Some of the fugitives also had prior criminal convictions.

Nine of those arrested were previously deported but illegally re-entered the country, which is a felony, ICE said.

"Our focus on criminals has an immediate positive impact by significantly improving the safety and security of our communities" said ICE spokesman Ricardo Wong. "By arresting and removing criminals and egregious immigration violators, we ensure the best use of agency resources and a continued focus on public safety."

Forty-six men and five women were arrested, which included 41 Mexican citizens, ICE said. The remaining arrestees included one person from each of the following countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Guatemala, Jordan, Korea, Pakistan and Poland.
