Mass. taxpayers shelling out $25 million a year on welfare waste

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A stunning new report says Massachusetts residents are shelling out $25 million a year to welfare recipients who aren't legally eligible to collect, according to the Boston Herald.

An audit of the Department of Transitional Assistance looked at families with at least one child and found 10 percent of all families on welfare get a check without providing proper documents.

The study says people were working outside jobs, failing to provide proof of citizenship and in some cases, even failing to prove a child was related to them.

The study comes one month after reports surfaced that the state couldn't account for 19,000 missing welfare recipients.

The state's inspector general says benefits should be suspended until families are at full compliance.
