HANOVER, Mass. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A Hanover girl thanked the three men who saved her from a freezing pond Thursday afternoon.

The girl, who wanted to be identified only as Chloe, is a seventh grader at Hanover Middle School. She said she went out on Forge Pond in Hanover and suddenly fell through ice.

She tells FOX 25's Ted Daniel she was trying to stay calm and not go under the water at all. The teen says she tried to pull herself up onto the ice several times, but it would break beneath her every time.

"I screamed 'Help, help!' because I was starting to panic at that point," said Chloe.

Richard Cullen of Scituate was out riding his bicycle when he heard Chloe screaming near the King Street Bridge. He soon spotted her in the water about 30 feet away from the shore struggling to keep her head above water.

Cullen stopped a car passing by and asked the driver to call for help.

"When I looked over and she went down once, that's when I went in," said Cullen.

He grabbed a tree branch, jumped into the water, and headed toward Chloe. Cullen had to break through some ice to reach the 14-year-old who had gone under water by the time he reached her.

When he finally reached her, Cullen pulled Chloe from the water and brought her back to the shore where two passersby, identified as Russ Reynolds of Marshfield and Ross Ferguson of Hanover, pulled both Cullen and the teen to shore.

Chloe was transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment and was released by Thursday night. Cullen refused treatment. He warmed up in an ambulance before he was brought a change of clothes and driven home.
