Sign post crashes through Hanson couple's windshield after crash

Posted: Updated:

HINGHAM (FOX 25 / Police in Hingham say seat belts saved the lives of two people involved in a car crash on Wednesday after a street sign crashed through their car.

A 2006 Ford Ranger driven by a 52-year-old Hanson man was traveling east near the five-way intersection at Derby Street and Route 53 when it began making a left turn. Another car was traveling west on Route 53 and continuing straight through the intersection when it struck the right rear quarter of the Ford.

The collision caused the Ford to strike a curb, continue onto the sidewalk, and hit a highway sign. The sign post broke off and was propelled into the car's windshield directly between the driver and his 48-year-old wife.

Both the driver and his wife were wearing their seat belts and were not injured. The other driver, a 56-year-old man from Norwell, was also not injured.

Police say if the couple was not wearing their seat belts, they likely would have been moving or sliding into the center of the car which would have put them directly into the path of the sign.
