WAREHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) — A driver going the wrong way crashed into several cars on Route 495 northbound overnight in Wareham, sending multiple people to the hospital.
State police say they received several calls from concerned drivers before the crash around midnight, but it was too late.
As police responded, they said the wrong-way driver, 24-year-old Kevin H. Schmidt, of Middleboro, hit two vehicles with his 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck.
Schmidt was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Tobey Hospital and then flown to Beth Israel Hospital with serious injuries.
One woman was trapped in her vehicle and had to be removed by emergency crews. Police said she had serious injuries.
The other drivers in the crash have been identified as 26-year-old Lise B. Calixte, of Randolph, and 48-year-old Eileen M O'Donnell, of Falmouth. State police said Calixte, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Sentra sedan, was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
O'Donnell was driving a 1996 Geo Prizm sedan. State police said an initial report indicates she suffered minor injuries, but was not transported from the scene to any medical facility.
The northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for about two hours. The crash remains under investigation and there was no word on charges.
In June 2012, a Brockton man drove the wrong way on Route 495 in Wareham, crashing head-on into another driver who was killed.
