Marietta students help feed hungry children

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. -

Some Marietta students will be working overtime on Friday as they set their books aside for a good cause. They're attempting a massive school-wide service project to provide meals for hungry children around the world.

In the halls of Mount Bethel Christian Academy, students will be packing for the You Fed Me project. The entire school will be making 100,000 meals to feed hungry children around the world. Each packet contains rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and a mineral packet.

Jim Callis, who heads the school, says nearly 500 students, from kindergarten to the eighth grade and many volunteers are involved in the event.

"For one day, I'm stopping death and suffering and people are going to be really grateful for ii," said 7th grade student Haley Gamis.

The kids will need all hands on deck to accomplish their goal, and that includes getting grandparents involved.

"Her grandfather is doing the hard work at six in morning setting up tables. I'm just going to be passing out snacks to the upperclassmen," said grandparent Carol Wernecke.

It's hard work for the kids, but it teaches a lifelong lesson.

"It makes me feel good to know that I can do something to help people who are hungry," said 7th grade student Nico Gray.

Callis says the school wants to instill in the children as they move on with their lives is to find opportunities to serve others that may need help.

"Even though I'm young, I can still make a difference in the world," said Gamis.

After being packed, the meals will be shipped to one of 19 underdeveloped countries around the world. For for more information, click here.
