PHILADELPHIA -

Police say officers shot a man suspected of robbing a pizza place Friday afternoon in Southwest Philadelphia after they say he turned around and reached for an object.

Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at a Little Caesars Pizza at Island and Elmwood avenues at 1:30 p.m.dou

An officer was chasing a male suspect from the restaurant when the man turned toward him and tried to get something out of his pocket, police said.

The officer then fired his weapon five times, hitting the suspect once in the back of his hip, police said.

The suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Police reported he was in a stable condition.

The suspect was identified by a witness as the man involved in the robbery. His gun was found on the 2600 block of Lloyd Street.

No police officers were injured. There is no word yet if other suspects were involved.

As part of standard procedure, the officer has been temporarily taken off of street duty while the shooting is investigated.
