Posted: Updated:

EAST BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A huge fire ripped through an apartment building Monday night in East Boston. Twenty-one people now have to find places to stay.

Flames broke out around 11:30 p.m. at a triple-decker on Sumner Street. Investigators believe the fire started on the second floor, then spread to the third floor and the roof. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the blaze.

Two people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. A teenager ran from the building to the nearby fire department to get help.

Firefighters also had to deal with frozen hydrants.

The cause of the fire is not known and investigators say it could take several days to determine that.

Police said the building has an estimated $600,000 in damages.
