MELVINDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Fire officials say a 50-year-old man was found dead following an explosion and fire at a home in Melvindale.

Neighbors say they heard multiple blasts before 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 17000 block of Hanna Street.

"The flames were too hot, the smoke was too much and it was just me," says one neighbor who woke up to the sounds of the explosion.

The victim has been identified as William Garrett Kristen, FOX 2's Roop Raj reports. His body was discovered in a bathtub.

Crews responding to the blaze couldn't immediately get inside and Kristen's body was found in a bedroom. The department says the front door was blocked by flames and the rear door was barricaded.

Neighbors say Kristen used an oxygen tank and was known to help others by shoveling their snow.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
