Boston fire highlights need to shovel around hydrants

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A fire on Mather Street in Dorchester prompted fire officials to issue a warning regarding snow removal around hydrants.

Firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire at 49 Mather Street around 11:43 p.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy amounts smoke coming from a large multi-family home.

Due to the blizzard, firefighters were forced to use a fire hydrant that was further away because the one closest to the home was covered in snow.

Firefighters rescued a male from the building's top floor.

Two firefighters and two residents were transported to a hospital with injuries.

According to the Boston Fire Dept., approximately 15 to 20 residents were displaced. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist, and the MBTA also sent a bus to keep the residents out of the cold weather.

The point of origin and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
