All lanes of L.I.E. reopened

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The snow cleanup is in full force on Long Island as Suffolk County bore the brunt of the storm, getting up to 30 inches of snow.

Crews were still trying to plow snow off the Long Island Expressway on Monday morning.

All lanes reopened just before 7 a.m.

The L.I.E was closed from Exit 57 in Hauppauge to Exit 73 in Riverhead.

Several cars remain stranded on the roadway. If your car is stranded, call 631-904-3050.

In Suffolk County right off the L.I.E near Exit 49, roads got pounded with more than two feet of snow. Crews worked around the clock all weekend, but there was still a huge stretch of the expressway that was closed.

"It's just a real tense situation. God forbid if somebody got hurt here. There's no way we could get an ambulance up here or emergency equipment," said Ed Masak, a Smithtown resident on Sunday.

Fox 5 met Masak down the road from his Smithtown home because his street still hasn't been plowed. The only way in and out is on foot. Even an SUV had to turn around.

Now he's wondering how he'll get to work and get his kids to school.

"This is insane. An insane amount of snow – I've never seen anything like this."

One of his neighbors got so frustrated waiting for the town plow he tried to use his own snow blower on the street just so he could take his daughter to the airport.

A mother Fox 5 spoke with was regretting the decision to take her two young daughters shopping, but trying to make the best of it.

"We thought the main roads would be better and they're really any better – I don't recommend going out," said Christine Nuzzi.

The Long Island Expressway remained smothered in snow for miles. A convoy of plows continued to work throughout the day on a treacherous stretch between Exits 57 and 73.

Some drivers couldn't get anywhere near the expressway because of unplowed local streets.

"Roads are treacherous, not good, not plowed – 347 was bad. I got halfway through and had to turn around," said Dave Farmer who was driving his vehicle.
