You can call it a gingersnap comeback! Laura and Susan Stachler of Sandy Springs have built a successful cookie shop, and it all started when Susan and her father were being treated for cancer at the same time.
The team is making a difference in the fight against cancer, one batch of cookies at a time. Every gourmet cookie baked is made with a little something extra -- a dash of hope inside every gingersnap.
"I was diagnosed at 22 with Hodgkin's lymphoma a week before college graduation, so definitely not a time in your life you think you are going to be faced with cancer," said Susan.
The news made even more difficult for Susan because her father Ken was already fighting non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. During treatment, Susan and her dad even went through chemo side by side. Nine years later, both are now cancer free, and out of their long journey, Susansnaps was born.
"I heard ginger was a stomach soother and by a fluke I made about 100 ginger snaps and took them to share at treatment center," said Laura.
The name of the Sandy Springs business honors one Susan's recovery, and another's memory. Susan's aunt, and namesake, died from Hodgkin's disease when she was just 28.
"She would be very proud. I know that we do something that uplifts other people," said Susan.
The mother and daughter are now on a simple mission, and what started as comfort for a few, has grown into a company shipping Susan Snaps across the country.
"When people call and say we have heard your story and we want to order from you because we think your story will uplift them. That's very humbling and rewarding that keeps us going every day," said Laura.
Susan says the cookies have the perfect blend of molasses, with spices and sugar on top. She says a little mother-daughter love goes into baking the cookies.
A portion of all cookie sales goes towards the Susan Carver Foundation which donates Susansnaps to cancer patients and hospitals across the metro-Atlanta area.
