Cape May Based Crew Used To Assist Disabled Cruise Ship

MERIDA, Mexico -

A Cape May, New Jersey based U.S. Coast Guard crew was scheduled to help provide assistance to a disabled Carnival cruise ship Monday.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous was diverted to provide assistance if needed to "Triumph," the Carnival cruise ship that was forced to operate on emergency power over the weekend.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the ship was located more than 100 miles north of Merida, Mexico Sunday after it reported a fire in its aft engine room.

Although the fire was extinguished and no one was injured, the ship was forced to run on emergency power.

Tug boats were dispatched to assist the disabled ship.

The USCGC Vigorous is a multi-mission 210 foot medium endurance cutter that is based at a training center in Cape May, according to the coast guard. The coast guard says the ship's missions include search and rescue, enforcement and maritime defense.
