AP/MYFOXNY.COM -- A New York City police officer shot and wounded a 31-year-old suspect armed with a handgun in Brooklyn, the NYPD said.

The department said it got a tip that a man who was illegally residing at a residence on Glenmore Avenue in East New York was in possession of a gun.

When officers surrounded the home at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the armed man tried to exit the back door and was confronted by a police officer who ordered him to drop his weapon.

Alexis McIntyre did not comply and the officer fired once, striking him in the torso, the NYPD said. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Police recovered a .38 caliber revolver.

McIntyre is charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
