Mass. welfare dept. used $3.4M in taxpayer money to fix glitch

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – The state's welfare department used millions in taxpayer money to fix a previous mistake, according to the Boston Herald.

The paper reports $3.4 million in overtime was paid to more than 900 employees in the Department of Transitional Assistance.

The DTA allegedly authorized the payments so staff could address 30,000 clients whose eligibility had to be recertified after the agency overpaid food stamp recipients by $27 million.

The scandal forced ex-commissioner Daniel Curley to resign last month.

The Herald says the U.S. Department of Agriculture is now investigating the DTA.
