Malden principal: Leave Valentine's Day candy, cards home

Posted: Updated:

MALDEN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – The principal at a Malden elementary school sent a letter home to parents Wednesday, telling students to leave Valentine's Day candy and cards at home.

The letter referenced cultural and language equality as Salemwood Elementary Principal Carol Keenan's reason for banning the holiday.

Thursday morning, Keenan wrote FOX 25 an e-mail, saying that all students will be making "friendship cards" for their classmates.

In her letter, Keenan said she wanted all students to be able to give and receive cards Thursday without putting the expense of buying cards and candy on parents and guardians.

FOX 25 talked to some angry parents Wednesday. One mom told FOX 25 that she tried complaining, but no one at the school returned her calls. Jennifer Kneeland said the superintendent's office told her nothing can be done because it's not a citywide problem.
