Jackson Jr. to appear in court for arraignment Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX 32 News has learned that the charges against Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandi, will be handled in separate court hearings Wednesday.

Jesse Jackson Jr.'s arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Washington D.C. followed by Sandi's hearing at 1:30 p.m.

The District Court Judge Robert Wilkins, is presiding over both cases. Judge Wilkins is a native of Muncie, Indiana, a Harvard Law Graduate, and was nominated to the bench by President Obama in 2010. Before that, he worked as a public defender, and then with a major law firm in Washington, as a litigator and highly-regarded criminal defense lawyer.

Federal prosecutors on Friday charged Jackson Jr. with conspiracy for allegedly spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal expenses. He faces a maximum of 5 years in prison, but prosecutors are expected to ask for just less than that.

The Chicago Democrat's wife, former alderman Sandra Jackson, was charged with filing false joint federal income tax returns. She faces a maximum of 3 years, but could get much less or even avoid prison altogether.

Both Jackson Jr. and his wife have agreed to plead guilty.

On Monday, Rev. Jesse Jackson said his former congressman son is under strict medical supervision as he struggles with bipolar disorder "compounded by the stresses" of his legal troubles.

Reverend Jesse Jackson issued a statement, saying "the hurt in this valley is indescribable. Jesse remains under tight medical supervision. He is struggling with the highs and lows of his bipolar disorder. Please pray for him, Sandi and their children....this is a storm, within time, storms pass over."

Jackson Sr. says he also hopes his son's apology will be accepted.

The hearings on Wednesday are likely to include the arraignments and guilty pleas from both Jacksons. Then, it will be weeks--maybe even several months--before they return before Judge Wilkins to be sentenced.
