Authorities: Sandy Hook gunman may have been obsessed with Norwegian bomber

Posted: Updated:

( – Authorities investigating the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary are now saying gunman Adam Lanza may have been obsessed with Anders Breivik, the Norwegian man who killed 77 people – mostly teenagers – at a summer camp in 2011 after detonating a car bomb near the Norwegian government's headquarters, killing eight people.

The Hartford Courant reports there were news articles about Breivik at Lanza's house. They say it's just one theory, but local authorities went to Washington, D.C. last week to brief federal investigators on the Breivik connection.
Officials told CBS News Lanza, 20, even saw himself as a competitor to Breivik. They also found evidence that Lanza targeted Sandy Hook Elementary because it was the "easiest target" with the "largest cluster of people."
Breivik is currently serving 10 to 21 years in prison for his shooting rampage, which is the longest allowed under Norwegian law. Lanza took his own life in the Sandy Hook massacre.

Investigators in the case also say Lanza often locked himself in a basement with blacked out windows and played graphically violent video games for hours.
Sources say Lanza was motivated by violent video games and viewed killing others as a type of "score."
