Moooove over! Bovines back up BeachLine

Posted: Updated:
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Westbound lanes of State Road 528 (The BeachLine Expressway) have reopened after being closed due to cows that were on the loose and blocking traffic.

Cows were causing chaos during rush hour traffic, leaving drivers in utter disbelief.  It was around mile marker 38, where the bovines galloped down the center of the highway, in the median, and on the side of the road.  One even stopped to take a bite.

It's not something you expect to see on your commute home from work.  Brevard County deputies were on horseback, attempting to corral the cows off of SR 528 and back to their pasture, where rancher Chuck Mack said  someone cut open his fence, letting the cows loose.

"It's a big pain, because the liability issue is the worst of it," said Mack.  "You got cars coming down the BeachLine, and it's a crowded road!"

Mack said the mess could have caused a serious accident. "I gotta walk this whole fence and make sure there's not any more holes in it.  I know of two holes that they cut, so I just got to make sure all the cows are back in and pray to the good lord that they're all put back where they're supposed to be."

Adding to the traffic mess, the Florida Highway Patrol said impatient drivers made u-turns and proceeded the wrong way down the road, which caused further delays for commuters.

Investigators said the road way was re-opened just before 6 p.m. and no cows or commuters were injured.  The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
