Cheli's Chili Bar, a staple in Dearborn for over 10 years, will close at the end of business Wednesday. A restaurant employee informed the media that 25 workers were informed of the closure over the weekend.
Reports indicate the owner of a nearby cigar bar is buying the property in a sale that's schedule to be finalized Wednesday.
The Dearborn location was the first of several Cheli's Chili Bars to open in southeast Michigan. Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios opened the restaurant in 2003, four years after being traded to the Wings from Chicago.
Chili Bar cook, Donald Korody said of Chelios, "he's the coolest boss." And once in a while employees also saw some other star athletes in real life. "I've seen Michael Jordan, Yzerman, Shanahan, just walk through the kitchen, it's really cool" Korody said. Customers we spoke with are also surprised the restaurant is closing saying the food is really good and it's a nice place that will be missed.
Many of the employees at the Dearborn restaurant are hoping to transfer to the location in downtown Detroit.
