Surveillance video reveals bicyclist was victim of hit-and-run

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A bicyclist was seriously injured in an accident in Wicker Park two weeks ago, but he's just now finding out what happened.

"I have a recollection of bring on the ground, breathing, and realizing this wasn't just like normal knocked wind, that it was something pretty painful," Valenta says of the accident.

Dustin Valenta, 27, was riding northbound on Milwaukee Avenue, when a woman in a parked car opened her door in front of him.

Valenta remembers that part, but he doesn't remember how he ended up with 23 broken ribs, a fractured pelvis and hip, two broken collar bones, and a fractured left shoulder.

The next thing he remembers is being in the ambulance.

"I just remember them saying that another bystander said I had been run over by a truck that had hit and run," Valenta recalls.

Valenta's parents, who live in different parts of the country, rushed to his side. He spent a week and a half at Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

His attorney quickly filed a lawsuit to gain access to surveillance video at a bank near the scene of the incident. The video shows Valenta's dark figure enter the left of the screen. Then, a truck rolls right over him and keeps going.

"It very clearly shows a white pickup truck with a white cab in the back strike and drive over Dustin's body as he laid in Milwaukee Avenue," family attorney Michael Keating says.

"It was really good to see it," Valenta's mother says. "But really hard to see him lying in the street like that."

The bicyclist says at this point he's grateful to be alive and to have his parents by his side.

"If I had to do this alone, I think I would, I don't know what it would be," Valenta says. "It would be insane."

Dustin's attorney tells FOX 32 News that he is upset with the way the Chicago Police Department has handled this accident. He has not had access to the accident report, but the video he was able to gain will be going directly to the Chicago Police Department.

Dustin has since been released from the ICU, but is still at the hospital recovering.
