Despite loss of top 2 seniors, Harvard leads Ivies

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - When Harvard lost its two senior co-captains to an academic cheating scandal just before the start of the season, it seemed like the defending Ivy League champions might need to set their sights on next year.

But the Crimson are in first place after one trip through the conference.

Harvard (15-7, 7-1 Ivy) beat Penn and Princeton last weekend and next plays four straight road games that will go a long way toward determining who gets the league's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

After making their first NCAA appearance since 1946 last year, the Crimson were expected to return to the tournament before co-captains Brandyn Curry and Kyle Casey withdrew from school. But Harvard has kept winning.

Coach Tommy Amaker says its evidence that the program wasn't just dependent on one or two players like NBA star Jeremy Lin.
