CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Police are investigating whether alcohol was involved in a West Side crash that killed a Cicero woman and left a car split in half.
The 1998 4-door Saturn was headed southbound about 2:15 a.m. when the driver lost control and hit a viaduct in the 1600 block of South Western Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
The force of the crash split the car in half, leaving the passenger side of the vehicle completely exposed, police said.
Paramedics found a 26-year-old Cicero woman -- the only passenger, and the driver's girlfriend -- lying on the ground next to the wreck, Mirabelli said.
She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she later died, he said.
The 33-year-old man driving was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital and released into police custody, Mirabelli said. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating. No charges have been filed as of Saturday morning.
