Flood warning, watches in effect after heavy rain

Posted: Updated:

Forsyth County is under a Flood Warning until further notice, and several counties in central Georgia remain under a Flood Watch as heavy rain moved through the area on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says the Big Creek near Cumming was nearing flood stage, and they expect minor flooding to occur in the area. Jasper, Lamar County, Pike County, Putnam County, and Upson County remain under a Flood Watch until Tuesday evening.

FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Joanne Feldman says the area will continue to see steady rain and strong winds before it tapers off from west to east through the late morning, and the winds will change direction.

The area could see a southwest wind this afternoon, but it could still gust up to 35 mph at times, and a Wind Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. this evening, says Feldman.

The National Weather Service says up to 1.5 inches of rain is possible for areas south of a line from Carrollton to Columbus to Cumming, and up to 3 inches of rain for areas south of a Columbus to Macon to Swainsboro line.

The Chattahoochee River, Flint River, Ocmulgee River and Oconee River basins are at risk for flooding, says the NWS.
