Gas prices continue to rise

Posted: Updated:

Gas prices are up once again. They've hit an all-time high this month at an average of $3.79. That's almost 10 cents more than prices just one week ago.

The highest price FOX 5 found in the metro Atlanta area on Monday was $3.99.

Gas station manager Sam Patel said he has heard many customers asking why prices have risen.

"We don't have any control and that's the only answer I can give to them," Patel said.

Patel says they make their money on the inside of the store and says they're lucky if they make any profit on gasoline.

"Sometimes we make a penny, two pennies," Patel said. "We sometimes lose or break even.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in $40 of gas, $5.20 goes to taxes, $3.20 for refining, $28.80 for the oil and just $2.80 goes into distribution and marketing.

Stores get a fraction of that last piece of the pie.

Experts say they are not expecting much relief in what you are paying at the pump over the next few weeks.

The U.S. Energy Information Agency is blaming the spike in prices on production at refineries.
