DeKalb County police are investigating how a 4-year-old girl walked away from her own home early Tuesday morning, only to turn up miles away at the DeKalb County Jail.
The jail is located four miles from where she was last seen at the Highland Forest Apartments on Central Drive and North Hairston Road in Stone Mountain.
Police have arrested the girl's 22-year-old mother, Keyonia Johnson. According to authorities, Johnson last saw her daughter at 2 a.m. She says when she went to bed, her daughter was home with her. When her roommate came home from work at 5 a.m., he found the door wide open. After they both looked for the girl and could not find her, they called 911.
Units came to the complex and looked for the little girl. They were about to issue a missing child alert when they got a call at around 7 a.m. that a woman dropped the child off at the jail, and was staying with her until someone showed up.
According to police, the woman told them that she saw the little girl early Tuesday morning in the area of Central and North Hairston. The girl came up to her car, and tried to take her home. The woman says she tried to get information about where the little girl lived, but the girl wasn't able to convey that type of information and that's when she decided to go to the jail.
Paramedics were called to the jail to check the little girl, and she was found to be unharmed and in good spirits.
Police say Johnson is facing charges of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. They say no charges have been filed against the roommate.
The child is currently in the custody of DFACS.
