PRESTON, Conn. (MyFoxBoston.com) — Connecticut state police are calling the shooting deaths of a woman and her two young grandchildren a double murder-suicide and say she had permission to pick them up from their daycare.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance says 47-year-old Debra Denison was armed when she left her Stonington home to pick up the children from their daycare in North Stonington Tuesday afternoon.

State police received a call from the mother of the children shortly after 4 p.m., saying her kids had been picked up from their daycare by their grandmother. The mother told state police the grandmother was overdue dropping off the kids. She said she found a note handwritten by the grandmother that concerned her enough to call police. She also said she had reason to believe the grandmother had a handgun.

State police issued an Amber Alert Tuesday evening for Denison, 2-year-old Alton Perry and his 6-month-old brother, Ashton. The three bodies were found in a parked car near Lake of Isle in Preston Tuesday night. State police said the three were suffering from obvious injuries.

State police believe Denison shot the kids and herself. Police seized a handgun at the scene.

The chief medical examiner's office will be performing autopsies.

Denison's family said she suffered from bipolar disorder and had a history of mental health problems.

State police said the daycare didn't do anything wrong since the grandmother was on the pickup list.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
