PHILADELPHIA -

If a picture is worth a thousand words, than Jaleel King has said a lot in his 36-years.

When King was just 8-years-old, he was shot by an angry neighbor while watching someone light off a firecracker.

He woke up a few days later in the hospital, paralyzed from the waist down.

"They reality sunk in as time went on what I could or couldn't do or what was perceived that I could or couldn't do," King tells FOX 29's Thomas Drayton.

It was that perception that King was desperately trying to overcome - and at the age of 20 - he did by discovering a new life behind a camera lens.

"The first time I picked up a camera, it was an experience."

King says everyone has a story to tell.

"Life shows us a lot of stories. I love it when I'm having a bad day and I take a picture that makes me smile.

It's an emotion King is hoping every person he photographs can feel, despite the many challenges life may bring.

"Even when I have obstacles, I don't try to avoid them, I try to figure out what I can do differently despite them."
