Brookhaven elects highway chief month after blizzard

Posted: Updated:

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Voters in Long Island's largest town have chosen a new highway superintendent following complaints over last month's blizzard response.

Newsday (http://bit.ly/14sPYqv ) says Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Kathy Walsh conceded to Republican state Assemblyman Dan Losquadro about two hours after polls closed on Tuesday night.

At the time, Losquadro led by around 51% to 48%.

Residents complained about unplowed streets for days after the blizzard dumped up to 30 inches of snow. The acting superintendent resigned.

The highway superintendent oversees a $70 million budget and is responsible for about 2,100 miles of town roads.
