Proposals could create pathway to eliminate state income tax

A Georgia Senate leader has introduced proposals that could move the state away from the income tax to more reliance on sales taxes.
Senate President Pro-Tem David Shafer filed measures calling for voters to decide on constitutional amendments. He says the changes would cap the income tax rate and limit sales tax increases except for income tax relief and infrastructure improvements approved by voters.
"Well Tennessee and Florida, neither of those states have income taxes. And so, if we can move away from an income tax here in Georgia, it would make us more competitive with those two neighboring states," Shafer said.
Shafer told FOX 5 that he's taking steps now to start a discussion on the proposals in hopes of putting the question to voters next year.
