CLAYTON, Ga. -

A new technology helped reunite a man with the class ring that he lost 40 years ago.

Richard Hale thought he'd never see the ring again after losing it in the Georgia Tech area back in 1972.

Richard and his now-wife, Betty Anne, were going steady back then, and he'd asked her to wear it.

"I was scared I was going to lose it, so I gave it back to him and he loses it," Betty Anne Hale said.

"We were riding around with friends and for some reason, I tossed something out the window, and when I did, I thought, 'Oh no my ring is gone,'" said Richard Hale.

More than 40 years later, he got the surprise of a lifetime.

"I got a call from my brother who lives in Tennessee; he's a big Facebook fan," Richard said. "Somebody's found the ring."

Ellen Ramey, who now lives in Clayton, Ga., found the ring more than four decades ago. In a phone interview, Ramey said that she always hoped she would one day find the owner.

"My mother had a class ring," Ramey said. "I wore it to school and lost it and it just stayed in my mind that it was important that these people get their ring back."

Through Facebook, the two connected and now the ring is back on Richard's finger.

"My mother and daddy sacrificed to pay for it," said Richard.

This ring is also special because Hale was part of the last class to graduate from O'Keefe High School in Atlanta. The school was closed in 1974.

Richard's family says every day he comes home from work, he proudly puts it on his finger and looks at it.
