Long Island University names first woman president

Posted: Updated:

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Long Island University has named its first woman president, former SUNY vice chancellor Kimberly Cline.

She's currently president of Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. She'll take over the six-campus private school in July.

She'll succeed David Steinberg, who's retiring after 27 years in the post.

Cline told Newsday she'll "build synergies between the university's urban and suburban campuses." She also hopes to build partnerships with industry and research institutions. She'll also focus on reducing expenses and increasing the school's endowment.

As SUNY's vice chancellor and CFO between 2005 and 2008, Cline oversaw a $10 billion budget.

She said she increased Mercy College's endowment from $20 million to $70 million during her five years there.

Cline is a graduate of Hofstra University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
