LOWELL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - Prosecutors say Massachusetts rescuers responding to a report of a smoking stove found an injured woman, who later died at a hospital.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office says Lowell authorities responded to a report of an apartment fire around 9:55 a.m. on Saturday.

When they arrived at 566 Market Street, they found smoke emanating from the stove and a woman nearby with many injuries.

The woman was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital. Authorities are calling her death suspicious.

Mercedes Tejada told FOX 25's Jarrod Holbrook that the deceased woman was her 60-year-old aunt Angela Aponte.

Aponte's family claims their loved one was attacked inside her apartment while she was cooking. They say Aponte was very active in her community, always volunteering, cooking food for people in need, and helping out at her church.

Aponte leaves behind one daughter. Her family is trying to get her body back to the Dominican Republic so that it can be buried near her son who died several years ago.

Police interviewed several people at Aponte's apartment complex and continue to nvestigate the circumstances surrounding her death. The chief medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Massachusetts State Police at 781-897-6600 or the Lowell Police Dept. at 978-674-4501.
