Planned Parenthood backs Markey for Mass. Senate

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - U.S. Rep. Edward Markey has won the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund in his bid for the U.S. Senate.

Marty Walz, president of Massachusetts Planned Parenthood, said the organization chose to back the Malden Democrat because of his "unwavering record" of support for abortion rights and access to health care for women.

Markey and U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, of South Boston, are vying for the Democratic nomination to run in the June 25 special election for the seat formerly held by John Kerry.

Lynch describes himself as "pro-life" but has made note of his past support of federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Markey has also been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the political arm of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
