WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -
There is new information about human remains found in the sewer in Warren and Sterling Heights last year.
"We just can't let the file close out. We have to do something," said Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green.
It's the kind of case that makes you sick to your stomach. Chuncks of flesh were just dumped in a sewer, and it happened not once, but twice.
Workers made the first discovery in Sterling Heights last summer, then again along the same sewer inceptor in Warren this past December.
"The size and shape and the cuts are very similar to the ones in Sterling Heights," Green said.
However, DNA testing revealed the pieces of skin don't belong to one person. They are from two different people, both white women, a realization that has made this discovery even more alarming.
"The fact that the body parts come from a different person concerns us and makes us want to be even more aggressive with this investigation," said Green.
However, the investigation has hit a dead end. Police have searched every database and can't find a match, and no one has stepped up to say they can identify the victims. That has led some to question whether this is medical waste and not evidence of murder, but Green said that theory doesn't add up.
"We're dealing with this as a homicide right now," he said.
A homicide that police believe metro Detroit can help solve.
"You can have a thousand theories at this point, and we simply need one phone call," said Detective Mel Nearing.
There are literally thousands of places throughout Oakland and Macomb counties where these parts could have been dumped, so police really need your help on this one. If you have any information, give Warren Police a call.
