Former Irish president to teach at Boston College

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Boston College says former Ireland president Mary McAleese will be a visiting scholar at the school in the fall.

McAleese, who was Irish president from 1997 until 2011, will serve as the Burns Library visiting scholar in Irish studies.

She will teach a course and give public lectures while doing research in the library's Irish book and manuscript collection.

McAleese, the first Irish president to come from British-ruled Northern Ireland, is now studying for a doctoral degree in canon law in Rome.

She was the oldest of nine children in a Catholic family who lived in a Protestant neighborhood in north Belfast until violence forced them out in the 1970s.

As president in 2011, McAleese hosted a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, marking a British monarch's first visit to the Irish Republic.
