NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -- Some of the most recognizable names in young adult fiction have come together to promote literacy. They took part in the anthology "Who Done It?" published by Soho Teen.

"The premise is the most evil editor in the world Herman Mildew has been murdered and over 80 of the world's young adult and middle grade authors are suspects in the murder so they all have to provide an alibi," says Dan Ehrenhaft of Soho Teen.

Each author worked for free. All the money raised from the book goes to 826NYC.

"826 is a free tutoring group down here in Brooklyn on Fifth Avenue that gives free tutoring for kids," says Jon Scieszka, the editor of the anthology and a board member at 826NYC. "It allows them to read and write which is kind of great. All run by volunteers and all nonprofit."

The idea for the book came about as a way to help the community.

"I always wanted to publish a book whose proceeds benefit 826NYC because I volunteered here for years and years and years and I love the place, it does so much amazing work for kids," Ehrenhaft says.

Almost instantly authors signed on to help out.

"Once we told them they could do this and support all the great things that go on down here everybody just said yes immediately," Scieszka says.

At a "Who Done It" book release party in Park Slope, the authors stuck by their alibis and their innocence. While they all have different ideas about who killed Herman Mildew, they do all agree on one thing: That 826NYC is a worthwhile cause.

"As a local Brooklyner, I very much support what 826 does," says Lauren Oliver, an author.

"It's a really wonderful organization, and so how could I resist that much fun" says Libba Bray, an author. "And also, who could resist the chance to come up with an alibi to a murder you may or may not have committed."

"Every penny that comes into 826 they use for the best thing: they put it right into the kids," Scieszka says. "And you can't ask for much more than that."

"Who Done It?" is available at major and independent book retailers.
