Naturalization ceremony at Boston College

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Boston College is set to host a naturalization ceremony for 100 immigrants as it honors its origins as a university founded 150 years ago to serve immigrants in New England's largest city.

U.S. District Judge George O'Toole will preside over the ceremony in which immigrants from 42 countries are expected to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States on Thursday. The newest citizens will include BC freshman Chuda Rijal of Bhutan.

BC officials say the naturalization ceremony will serve as a backdrop for a two-day symposium on migration that is scheduled to begin later Thursday. It will examine various issues, including refugees and forced migration, and race and class in U.S. immigration and policy.

Jesuits who founded Boston College 150 years ago served Irish immigrants in the city.
