School districts reconsidering winter vacations to accomodate snow days

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) – Kids see plows and snow and embrace snow days; however, some schools are pulling the plug on school vacations due to the high amount of cancellations.

Tom Scott, the Executive Dir. for the Mass. Association of School Superintendents, says school makeup days are plowing into students' summers and administrators are trying to find a way to shovel up the mess.

"The trend right now is using conference days or work days," Scott told FOX 25's Jarrod Holbrook.

School districts statewide are also considering cutting holidays for makeup days.

Brockton Public Schools will be in session for half of this coming Good Friday, a day they normally have off.

Administrators tell FOX 25 if it's a religious holiday for the family it will be an excused absence.

Districts like Taunton are already thinking about next year's winter. Most parent support the idea.

"I think the only alternative we have is to back the school year up. I think going late into June is not a good option because it's warmer. Our schools are not equipped for air conditioning and other arrangements to make it comfortable for learning. So I think we're really having to look at starting school earlier," Scott said.
