Report: Cabral received $12k vacation payout despite not documenting time

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON ( – A vacation payout to one of Gov. Deval Patrick's newest cabinet members is raising some eyebrows.

The Boston Herald reports that former Suffolk County sheriff Andrea Cabral was paid nearly $12,000 for unused vacation time when she left the sheriff's office to join Patrick's cabinet in February.

Officials said that Cabral wasn't required to report her days off and the sum, equaling five weeks of vacation, was based on her 20-years of public service.

Sheriff's office officials told the Herald that Cabral was a non-reporter and didn't have to document her time off.

"It sounds like her department paid her the money because they wanted to," David Tuerck, of Suffolk University's Beacon Hill Institute told the Herald.
