New Bedford standoff ends peacefully

Posted: Updated:

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A four-hour standoff in which police exchanged gunfire with man holed up in a New Bedford condominium has ended with the suspect in custody.

Police Chief David Provencher says officers responded to the Southcoast Condominiums complex at about 5 p.m. Thursday for reports of a despondent and suicidal man.

Following the arrival of the department's tactical unit, the man shot at police from his window. He retreated into the apartment after police returned fire.

At least five shots were exchanged. There were no reports of injuries.

Provencher credits police negotiators with getting the man, identified as 30-year-old John Hernandez, to surrender at about 9 p.m.

The chief tells The Standard-Times the man would face "serious" charges.
