NYPD to increase Times Square presence for Easter

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Easter weekend, the NYPD is preparing for potential problems in Times Square and Midtown Manhattan.

The goal is to disrupt gangs that have caused violence in the area in recent years following the auto show at the Javits Center, according to DNAinfo.com's Murray Weiss. He reported that a few years ago, the gangs started using Easter as a time to congregate in Midtown Manhattan to create mayhem in what was partly a show of force and partly an initiation.

In 2010, cops arrested more than 50 people. Stores had windows smashed and three people were shot.

In addition to an increased presence in Times Square, the NYPD will also be monitoring Facebook and Twitter to see where these gangs may be trying to meet up.

Weiss said the department will flood the area with a lot of police presence, including helicopters and cops on roofs.
