Hundreds of animals rescued from LI home

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Long Island home was packed with animals: as many as 60 cats, 20 dogs, hamsters, ferrets, chinchillas, and rats.  Suffolk County SPCA workers removed the animals from the home on Tuesday.

Maureen Schneider of the SPCA said that the Medford home was a mess with feces and food everywhere.

The home's owner signed over the animals the SPCA, which removed them for triage and treatment.

The woman has not been charged at this time.  Her daughter is a veterinarian, according to reports.  Schneider said the woman loved the animals but became "totally overwhelmed."

Neighbors complained of dogs barking but were surprised by the hundreds of animals living there.

The fire department was called to assist with removal.

One of the cats bit a photographer.

The cats and dogs removed from the house were taken to the Brookhaven animal shelter and will eventually be put up for adoption.  Various rescue groups will take the other animals.
