Cops want Banks charged for bad checks

DETROIT (WJBK) -

State Representative Brian Banks had to overcome some previous felony convictions to win his seat in Lansing.  He did his time for those crimes, but history may be repeating itself.

"My past is just that.  My past is my past," Banks said last November on Fox 2's "Let It Rip".

Less than 24 hours after that appearance, Banks went to the Thrifty Scot Supermarket and passed a bad check.  Five days later, he went to the same store and passed another bad check.

So I called him Wednesday to ask what's the deal?  He told me there is no deal.  He covered the checks.

The store's owner said he tried for months to get Banks to pay up, but it wasn't until he called the cops that Banks tried to make good on the checks, sending in someone else to drop off the loot.

Police investigated, then asked Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy to charge Banks with a felony.

The new Banks looks a lot like the old Banks.  He has multiple felony convictions and a history of writing bad checks and credit card fraud.  He has been evicted from half a dozen homes and was forced to leave one home just last month.  The landlord says he still owes back rent.

And who can forget Banks' Land Rover being repossessed shortly after the good people of Detroit, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores elected the Democrat to the state House.

These bad checks could mean trouble for Banks in Lansing, too.  They were written on his campaign account, but they appear nowhere in his campaign finance report.  Leaving out that kind of information could be a violation of state law.

Banks wouldn't talk on camera, but his attorney, Andrea Bradley, did send us a statement.  She said Banks' campaign treasurer didn't realize a contribution check had bounced, and that is why there were insufficient funds in the campaign account.

Bradley said, "Although Banks is not a signer on the campaign account and not the treasurer for the campaign account, Banks paid back the money for the check from his own pocket."

She did not say why it took Banks months to pay back the debt or anything about the second check he bounced.
