NJ Senate President Says Rutgers AD Must Go

Posted: Updated:
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -

New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney on Thursday said Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti should either step down or be fired immediately.

The statement from Sweeney comes in the wake of practice video that surfaced this week of now former Rutgers coach Mike Rice throwing basketballs at players and yelling slurs at them.

On Wednesday, Rice was fired from his position.

In the statement, Sweeney said the school's athletic director cannot remain in his current position.

"For the good of the school, its students and its faculty, he should either resign or be removed from his position immediately," the statement read.

"This incident will continue to hang over Rutgers like a dark cloud for weeks, months and perhaps years to come. It seems pretty clear that things were not handled well from the start. Now, we have also learned that Mr. Rice is eligible for a $100,000 bonus for finishing out the season, money we would not have gotten had he been fired last year. That fact makes his suspension and fine look even more ridiculous," the statement read.

Video of the coach was given to the school late last year, but the athletic director opted to suspend Rice instead of firing him.

According to the Associated Press, more than 50 faculty members signed a letter calling for the dismissal of Pernetti.
