DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 31-year-old mother hurried away from a police precinct Thursday.  She will likely be facing charges for child abuse and neglect and is accused of leaving her ten-year-old son and ten-month-old daughter alone overnight at a home on Pinehurst on the city's west side.

Apparently someone broke into the home while the children slept.  We're told the little boy woke up to find he and his baby sister were all alone and their television and other belongings gone.  Police say he called 911, grabbed his sister and ran out of the house.

"My dog was barking, and I got up and looked out the kitchen window, didn't see anything," said neighbor Mario Fox.

"I heard crying this morning when I woke up, so I came out," said neighbor Sheena Vance.  "I saw them when the police car took them."

Police say the mother came home around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.  She was interviewed by police, but would not make a statement and would not talk to the media.

The father of the youngest child was allowed to take the children home.  He and the mother are estranged, but he told us why he believed she had left them alone around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

"There was a death in the family," he explained.

Child Protective Services is involved, and police are submitting a warrant for charges against the mother, who neighbors say is a good mom.

"She takes care of her kids.  I was surprised that she was even gone," Fox said.

As for the children, thankfully they are just fine.  The little boy is being credited for his quick thinking.

"That is sad, but I'm glad he had the courage to do that," said Felicia Allen.  "You don't leave (a) ten-year-old (alone) with (a) baby in the house."
