Cameras sprout in community garden as thefts mount

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Gardeners are planting cameras at a Boston low-income seniors community garden where thieves stole costly water pipes.

The Boston Herald reports that people who tend the garden are trying to raise money for a secure fence.

Valerie Burns, president of Boston Natural Areas Network, a nonprofit that owns the land and oversees infrastructure for 59 area gardens, says gardeners have raised nearly $2,000. That's nearly enough to replace pipes and faucets for all 22 water stations.

But she says that to prevent future thefts the group needs $125,000 to build a 750-foot-long fence.

Sarah Hutt, a gardener at the site, says people are placing cameras to capture the images of the thieves if they return.
