Travel to be restricted on Cape Cod's Sagamore Bridge

Posted: Updated:

BOURNE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Travel on the Cape Cod Canal's Sagamore Bridge will be temporarily restricted in April due to scheduled painting.

The restrictions, which will avoid dates of peak traffic volume, are planned during the weeks of April 8 to 12 and April 16 to 19. The plan is to take only one lane during 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and leave open two lanes going on Cape Cod and one lane off Cape Cod.

All travel lanes will be open for Patriots Day, April 15.

Field work for the paint project began earlier this month and will take about 18 months to complete. The expected completion date for the project is August 2014.

The project includes abrasive blast cleaning of the 1,408-foot-long bridge. The structure will then be re-painted with a new high performance paint system to replace the existing paint system which contains lead primer. All work will be performed in accordance with applicable environmental regulations and health and safety standards.

Following the two week period, there may be additional periodic lane restrictions.
