Fallen Firefighter's Son: 'Super Hero' Dad Never Took Off Cape

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"He was our anchor, and today our family's lost our big anchor."

You could hear the heartache in Michael Goodwin Jr.'s voice as he remembered his father Mike Sr. Surrounded by his family, friends, and firefighters, he looked back on the life of a brave man gone too soon.

"It was like having a super hero, but I looked at him as a dad, you know? You could say he never took the cape off until he came home," the younger Goodwin told reporters outside the family's home in the Northeast.

The 53-year-old fire captain died Saturday night when the roof he was standing on at a smokey fire scene in Queen Village collapsed, plummeting him into the fire. Despite some heroic efforts to rescue the 30-year veteran,  Goodwin could not be saved.

"He's probably glad it was him and not the other guy. That's how tight our brotherhood is," said Fire Union President, Bill Gault.

Goodwin lived in a tight-knit neighborhood now festooned with red ribbons and red porch lights. His 10-year-old nephew, Ryan, built a memorial to the fallen hero in his front window.

"He was the man. He was a church-going man, loving man, caring man, honest man. He was everything you could want in a dad," Michael Jr. said.

Fire investigators continue to work at the scene of Saturday night's tragedy, trying to determine the cause of the three-alarm blaze. Gault explained why Goodwin and other firefighters were on the roof fighting the fire.

"They go on the roof to get the smoke out of the building," he said. "That's why we break the windows or cut the roof: to get the smoke out, the gases out."

For Michael Jr. and his family, there are tough days ahead. The  pain is deep. Captain Goodwin's funeral is now set for Thursday.

"We all know it can happen and it happened," Michael said. "But you know what? He died doing what he loved: fighting fires."

Fire investigators removed an electrical circuit box and fuse box from the fire scene and took pictures of it. There is still no word on the cause of the fire. Several businesses were heavily damaged along with apartments upstairs.

Fourth Street and parts of Fitzwater Street remain closed due to the investigation.
