Murder trial of Lowell man gets started

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - The murder trial of a Lowell man charged with using a shotgun to kill another man sitting on the front porch of his grandmother's Lawrence home has started.

Prosecutors say 21-year-old Rafael Martinez killed 20-year-old Timothy Walker in July 2010 with a shotgun blast to the head. Walker died two days later.

In opening statements Tuesday in Essex Superior Court, prosecutors showed surveillance video of a man getting out of an SUV, walking down the street, and opening fire. Martinez was identified as the alleged shooter after the video aired on a Boston television station in May 2011.

The Eagle-Tribune ( ) reports that Martinez's attorney countered that the face of the man in the video cannot be distinguished, and there is no evidence tying his client to Walker's death.
